چکیده

Selenium (Se) biofortification of plants has been recognized as a good strategy to improve the nutritive value vegetables and increase Se daily intake in humans. Identifying most appropriate method enrich is key issue process. We tested technique that produces enriched seedlings for transplant, yet barely modifies conventional cultivation techniques. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum were exposed selenium by adding 0, 1 3 mg L?1 (lettuce) 2 (basil) Se, sodium selenate, growing substrate immediately after sowing. When reached an size, they transplanted into open field, grown until maturity. accumulated without any reduction leaf biomass at The highest dose induced higher antioxidant capacity flavonoid content both species sampling times. At maturity, biofortified still showed compared control, would be able provide from 10% 17% 9% 12% adequate (AI) Se.

Selenium Accumulating Leafy Vegetables Are a Potential Source of Functional Foods.

Selenium deficiency in humans has been associated with various diseases, the risks of which can be reduced through dietary supplementation. Selenium accumulating plants may provide a beneficial nutrient for avoiding such illnesses. Thus, leafy vegetables such as Amaranthus hybridus, Amaranthus sp., Cucurbita maxima, Ipomoea batatas, Solanum villosum, Solanum scabrum, and Vigna unguiculata were ...

Biofortification of UK food crops with selenium.

Se is an essential element for animals. In man low dietary Se intakes are associated with health disorders including oxidative stress-related conditions, reduced fertility and immune functions and an increased risk of cancers. Although the reference nutrient intakes for adult females and males in the UK are 60 and 75 microg Se/d respectively, dietary Se intakes in the UK have declined from >60 ...

Selenium Biofortification and Phytoremediation Phytotechnologies: A Review.

The element selenium (Se) is both essential and toxic for most life forms, with a narrow margin between deficiency and toxicity. Phytotechnologies using plants and their associated microbes can address both of these problems. To prevent Se toxicity due to excess environmental Se, plants may be used to phytoremediate Se from soil or water. To alleviate Se deficiency in humans or livestock, crops...

Response of Vegetables to Cadmium-Enriched Soil

Environmental and water pollution through heavy metals is a growing concern. The recycling of untreated wastewater, which is often contaminated with heavy metals, for agricultural applications is becoming more popular. However, information on the amount of absorption and accumulation of cadmium (Cd) at variable concentrations by different crops is limited. This study aims to analyze the impact ...
